From day one of becoming a yoga instructor, it has been my dream to open a yoga hostel and to teach SUP Yoga along with it. I researched training’s for a whole year and couldn’t seem to find one that resonated with me, until I came across Island Yoga’s SUP Yoga Teacher Training. Upon seeing the announcement, I responded immediately. Rachel Brathen has inspired me for quite sometime to go after my dreams, so I knew that this was the training for me.
Fast forward one year and I found myself in Aruba training under the AMAZING instructors at Island Yoga. My fellow TT’s and I spent four days under the sun learning, laughing, bonding, yoga-ing, and having the time of our lives. Getting certified at Island Yoga was one of the biggest leaps of faith I took as an instructor and traveler. I loved every minute of it! So enjoy these moments with me!
1. Jess’s Morning SUP Yoga classes
Jess’s smile and go getting attitude is all I need in life! We began every morning with a SUP Yoga class. They were so much fun and incredibly challenging! What I loved most about our classes with her is that she always reminded us to smile and snapped for us when we fell of our boards. And yes falling off your board will happen. It’s all part of the fun! Jessica and Ryan Taylor led our training and did a fantastic job at it! The classes were educational, organized, and professional. I highly recommend taking a class or training with them!
2. TerraWave Yoga Class
This class was an AMAZING experience! This was by far the most fun I have ever had on my mat! I feel that this class was a mixture of restorative SUP Yoga (but on the land), 80s workout, and Vinyasa Yoga all in one! You use two yoga mats. One for yourself and one for the Terrawave board. The Terrawave board goes on top of the second mat. This class is a great way to work on balance and focus while having fun at the same time! Terrawave is a new yoga practice and it’s going to change the yoga world! Our instructor Carolien is by far one of the most compassionate human beings I have ever met. Her light and love for the practice and her students made me feel so warm on the inside. You can check out her classes here!
3. The Delightful Vegetarian Meals
The meals created for us at Nourish Café are a vegetarian’s dream! From Chia Pudding and Banana Oatmeal Goodness to Green Smoothies and Quinoa Salads, there is no actual way to be disappointed. ALL of the food was delicious, fresh, and so so healthy. If you go to Aruba, you have to eat here. No exceptions. You have to. It will change your life.
4. Evening Meditation with Rachel
This class was much needed. I remember my body being exhausted that night, so I didn’t know if I would make it the whole way through. I did though and those 45 minutes were everything. My breath immediately came into place and my mind eventually settled. The space that Rachel held for all of us was sacred and I feel that the whole room took a chance that night to say yes to the unknown. Meditation is a life changer and yes it can be difficult at first, but it’s needed. We all need to meditate. Rachel’s story has always inspired me, you can read more about her life here.
5. Ambre’s Yin Yoga Class
This class was beautiful. Ambre’s voice made the class super relaxing and flowing. It was all about listening to our bodies and being soft towards ourselves. I learned a new adjustment for half pigeon from her Yin class, that I teach in ALL of my classes now. If there is one thing that really stayed with me after our training, it is what Ambre told us: “Humans always think that they’re trapped. It’s our minds that make us feel that way, but we are always free.” If you want more inspiration from Ambre, check out her website here.
I tell myself those words every day.
We are always free.
So, wherever you are in the world and whatever you are doing there, set yourself free. You deserve it. Go after your dreams. Follow those who inspire you and ask questions. Love yourself and never ever give up.
Special thank you to:

Brytta is a world traveling yoga teacher from NYC. Lover of glitter, SUP Yoga and climbing waterfalls. When she's not adventuring around the world and practicing yoga, she's writing about her adventures and coming up with new ways to take her yoga off the mat and into the world! When she's not doing any of that, she's outside studying constellations and making wishes on shooting stars. A big fan of discovering new music, her current favorite musicians to practice to are: Nahko and Medicine For The People, Trevor Hall and CloZee. ♥
