Today I write to you from a new kind of jungle.
Xanadu Yoga has left the wildlife of Costa Rica and has traveled to the concrete jungle!
Xanadu Yoga is in New York City!
We are currently teaching private one-on-one classes in your home, studio, or hotel. We also teach via Skype, at office events, and for kids birthday parties!
Has anyone noticed the heat this summer?
It is the hottest month of the year. The sun is beating down on our skin, the humidity feels like it is never ending, and our bodies have to deal with this day in and day out.
There is a balance.
After getting sunburnt every day for two weeks in Costa Rica and then learning the hard way from sun poisoning, I decided to take a step back and take care of my body.
So I learned quickly. I learned to never sacrifice my body for anything. If I needed to rest my feet after a long hike, then I did so. If I needed to sit in the shade after hours of surfing in the sun, then I did so. If I needed to take a nap on a hammock after a long day of work, then I did so. Never sacrifice your body for anything. You only get one of those, so be kind to it.
Here are my tips and tricks for avoiding the sun and taking care of yourself:
- Apply an SPF that is 50 or higher
- Do not apply SPF chapstick on your lips, I recommend using vaseline in the summer to avoid chapped lips instead.
- Always carry a bottle of water with you. Who cares if it doesn’t fit in your cute purse or if you don’t feel like carrying it.
- Hydrate hydrate hydrate, repeat repeat repeat.
- Buy a fan and turn it on. Fans also prevent mosquitos from biting you, so fans are fantastic!
Aloe plants save lives. Cut off a stem of an aloe plant, put it in the fridge for 15 minutes, take it out and gently rub the aloe all over your burnt skin. I recommend doing this before bed then wrapping yourself in a blanket. If the magic works then your sunburn will be almost gone by morning. Keep the stem and put it back in the fridge for next time.
- Regardless of where you are in the world, the sun is at its brightest between 12-4pm. Go out in the early morning to enjoy your day, come in for lunch, then after 4pm go out again and enjoy your evening.
Smoothie every damn day >>>> Life Motto
Get some fruit, chop it up, add some ice and blend. I suggest adding watermelon and cucumber to your smoothie for more hydration.
What about yoga? When do I fit in yoga if it’s so hot? How do I not overheat?
In Central America, it rains every day at 3pm during off season and the time it ends is unknown. So do yoga while its raining! Who needs music to move and flow to when you have the rain? I love the rain and some of my best hours on my mat have been spent while its raining. The rain cools down the temperature making it easier to breathe, flow, and simply be. Other great times to do yoga and meditate are early in the morning or after the sun has set.
Sometimes we need little life reminders, so take an inhale, now exhale, and repeat the following:
It is OK to relax.
It is OK to give my body a break.
It is OK if I don’t fit everything into one day.
I will make time for myself.
I will take care of myself.
I will love myself.
And I’m not sorry.

With light, love and glitter,
Brytta is a traveling yoga teacher from NYC. Lover of glitter, SUP Yoga and climbing waterfalls. When she's not adventuring around the world and practicing yoga, you can find her in Chicago teaching at StudiosFUSE and probably eating vegetarian pizza. When she's not doing any of that, she's outside studying constellations and making wishes on shooting stars. A big fan of discovering new music, her current favorite musical artists to practice to are: The Singer and The Songwriter, MC Yogi, and ODESZA. ♥
