Welcome to my real life fairytale, Ireland. The land of fairy trees, leprechauns, and the kindest people I’ve ever met. I hope this adventure leaves you swept off your yoga mat in the most magical ways!
Day 1- Dublin
Get all settled into your accommodation. If backpacking, I recommend The Abbey Court Hostel. They have a hammock room and free breakfast! Once checked in, drop your bags off and explore the streets of Dublin! Although Grafton Street is FULL of tourists, they have some of the most talented street musicians. So you have to walk it at least once. Once finished at Grafton, head over to Stanhope Street for donation meditation at Sanctuary and if hungry after, head downstairs for a green smoothie at the little grocery store below! After a lovely hour of mindful rest, take a stroll to Waltons Music. This is the music store where the Irish movie musical, Once was filmed. Magic was created in this store, so DO NOT miss out. I know you may be exhausted by this point, but the day is still young! Head downtown Dublin and catch a bus to Dun Laoghaire Pier for some Wales watching (yes the country you see across the water), a ninety-niner ice cream, and hot vinyasa flow at My Yoga Body. I learned SO many hands-on assists at this studio, that it’s on my Five Fabulous Yoga Studios blogpost. After that epic first day of adventure, enjoy a sunset over the pier and head back to town.
Day 2- Howth Cliffs
Hopefully you’re well rested from your first day and ready for some gorgeous hiking at Howth Cliffs. Only a 15 minute train ride from downtown Dublin and a full day of outdoor adventure! Howth Cliffs are these green grassy hills with lavender flowers on the tops and an ocean view that goes on for miles. I actually cried from the beauty upon seeing the views. That something this magical actually exists. The hike is about 3.5 hours total. This includes a view of the Baily Lighthouse, a secret beach, and the farmers market fresh fish and chips at the end of your hike. But before your journey ends, take a few minutes to meditate up on the cliffs. Once headed back to the city, enjoy a lovely journal session at St. Stephen’s Green. This is the main park in Dublin that is a great place for people watching and laying under the trees. After your day of green adventure, pack your bags. You’re headed to County Cork!
Day 3- County Cork
From Dublin, you can ride the Aircoach all the way to Cork. It’s about four hours, so perfect for a morning nap! Cork is a college town that is cool to explore for half a day, but the real magic appears in the towns outside of the city. First you have to get a smoothie at Cafe Gusto then head to the bus station. Destination: Blarney Castle. The castle is truly medieval magnificence and yes you should kiss the Blarney Stone. However, the castle gardens are where it’s at! A wonderland of color garden and jungle waterfalls, just to mention a few. This adventure should last a full day, so you will be ready for day FOUR of your Irish adventure!
Day 4- Cobh and Aghada
Cobh and Aghada are two towns in the countryside of Cork. You can take a 25 minute train ride from Cork to Cobh to start your day. Cobh is a small town that’s known for being the last port of the Titanic before it went down. The port is now part of the Titanic Experience Cobh which you really should check out! The town also a HUGE church that is perfectly out of place, but absolutely stunning inside and out! Definitely worth a morning to explore! Aghada should be your evening destination! It’s a lake town I was so lucky to live in. The beautiful skies and sunsets I experienced in Aghada were other worldly. I remember running into Rosie’s Bar and exclaiming quite loudly “DID YOU SEE THAT SUNSET?!” Everyone looked at me like I was crazy, then said as locals they’re used to it. You guys, DON’T EVER GET USED TO SUNSETS. They’re the magic we are blessed with everyday! So yes, go get dinner and a Guinness at Rosy’s Pub and enjoy the sunset over the lake. It may just change your life!
Day 5- Midleton and Inch Beach
Midleton is another small town outside of Cork known for the Jameson Distillery. Take a tour of the distillery where even the chandeliers are made of beer bottles. Then grab picnic food TO GO at the farmers market. ALL the food is local, delicious and vegetarian friendly. They also have some incredible bands playing here such as the Grammy nominated band, August Walk. I may or may not have been in their first music video, Success. So once you have your picnic food, grab a cab or rent a car and drive it to Inch Beach. A magical beach where winding roads meet grassy meadows and grassy meadows meet the glistening sea. This is a perfect beach to catch a wave, enjoy a cliff side picnic on your yoga mat, and explore the 40 steps.
Day 6- Kinsale
My most favorite town in the whole wide world! Kinsale is a colorful town full of vibrant colors, art galleries, interesting bookstores, and sailboats! It’s the perfect place for a rainy day adventure!
Day 7- Cliffs of Moher and Gus O’Connor’s Pub
You will need a car today or take a tour to these places. Vast, green, and windy overlooking the Atlantic. The Cliffs of Moher are the most western point of Ireland. Something about these cliffs brought true silence and wandering to my soul. After a morning cliff adventure, make your way down to Gus O’Connor’s Pub. This is a two room pub below the cliffs. This pub plays fantastic bands and serves delicious vegan food. So grab yourself a drink, a bowl and vegan chili and enjoy an afternoon of Irish tunes!
I lived in Ireland a few years back and I will never forget my journey there. It was a journey of stillness, healing, and gratitude for the beauty right in front of me. So what is what I wish for you. Wherever you’re at in the world, may your journey be filled with stillness within, healing within, and gratitude for all that your eyes see and all that you experience on your traveling yoga mat.
