As a traveling yoga teacher, food is just as much priority in my life as yoga. I decided to go vegetarian three years ago upon dealing with some health issues. I noticed significant changes in my body almost immediately. Three years later, I’m still vegetarian and now living and teaching in Chicago, Illinois. If there is one thing you need to know about Chicago, it’s that the vegetarian food is life changing! In this week’s post I want to share that food with you in:
A Vegetarian’s Tale- Chicago Style!
Let’s start with breakfast!
I always start my day with a smoothie. I am all about breakfast in a bottle, so I get the A B & J from Herb-N-Juice. This smoothie is full of blueberries, bananas, chocolate almond milk and more! They also offer a juice menu. I suggest the Green-N-Lean if juice is your thing!
It’s Snack Time!
Snacks have been my life since the day I was born. My go to snack place in Chicago is the Oromo Cafe. It’s a vegan cafe located in Lincoln Square with vegan tea, vegan treats, and vegan snacks. My favorites are the beet hummus and hibiscus iced tea. Not only do they have vegan snacks, but it’s a Wi-Fi cafe with a green atmosphere. So it’s perfect for your typical healthy entrepreneur.
Next Stop Lunch!
If you’re a vegetarian in Chicago you need to go to the Chicago Diner. If you’re not a vegetarian in Chicago, you need to go the Chicago Diner. This diner has all things vegetarian AND vegan. There are substitutes for all things meat. Not to mention the super comfy feel of the place that makes you feel like a local. My favorite items on the menu are the S.U.V. (Straight Up Veggie), the Cajun Black Bean Burger, and the Carrot Cake Shake.
A Light Snack!
Okay I admit it, I am a snacker. I love snacking on healthy food especially salads! My favorite salad is the Greek Salad from Athena Restaurant in Greek Town. Not only is the food fresh, but they have a waterfall inside their restaurant! They just needed to have a waterfall for me to come, but the food is icing on the cake!
Dessert First of Course!
Speaking of cake, have you tried the Banana Bread French Toast Cake from Punch Bowl Social Chicago? It is HUGE so you will need someone to help you on this one. What I LOVE about Punch Bowl Social are the games! They have a GIANT Scrabble board, arcade games, bowling and more! It is the perfect day of fun to spend with your friends and eat yummy food while enjoying it!
Okay We Made it! It’s Dinner Time!
I am all about helping the Earth while eating healthy. So I always enjoy my dinner at the farm to table restaurant Range in Lincoln Park. Range has options for everyone (meat eaters too). My favorite dish is the veggie burger with a side salad. All of the vegetables from Range are picked the same day they go on your plate so it is FRESH. All of their food comes from local farmers too. So not only are you eating healthy, but you’re supporting local businesses!
